Athens man accused of attacking Schodack officer
Minor injuries reported
SCHODACK — An Athens man faces a host of charges for allegedly attacking a town police officer during a traffic stop Thursday.
Michael Dauphin, 24, was riding in a car stopped for a slew of traffic violations near the intersection of Columbia Turnpike and Miller Road in the town. Officer Jordan Harring observed the man in possession of heroin and hypodermic needles.
A fight ensued as Dauphin tried to prevent seizure of the drugs and needles. Dauphin allegedly attempted to take the officer’s taser, which had been deployed. Officers from surrounding agencies responded and assisted in the arrest.
Both men were transported to Albany Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.
Dauphin was arraigned in Schodack Justice Court on charges of possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, robbery 3rd degree, and assault 2nd degree. He was sent to Rensselaer County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 cash or surety bond.
Schodack Police Chief Joseph Belardo, in a media release, said additional charges may be filed.
The driver of the vehicle was ticketed and released.
Dauphin is due back in town court for a preliminary hearing at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
