The Albany Dutchmen (18-17) fell to the Glens Falls Dragons (14-18) Tuesday night in Glens Falls, 7-6 in 10 innings.
It was a sloppy game throughout, as the teams combined for seven errors, six of them coming from the Glens Falls side, allowing for only four of the 13 runs scored to be earned.
Glens Falls would begin the scoring in the bottom of the third, as back-to-back RBI singles from Robbie Knightes (St. John’s University) and Ryan Hooper (University of California, Davis) scored Brian Uliana (Rider University) and Josh Brown (Skidmore College) to give them a early 2-0 lead.
The Dutchmen would look to respond the next half inning, using a pair of Dragon errors to give them their first run of the evening. Jon Skidmore (Dallas Baptist University) led off reaching on an error, and after moving up on a Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican University) single would score on a Drew Greenwood (Bellarmine University) throwing error.
The hosts would quickly respond, putting up a run of their own in the fourth. Greenwood would avenge his error with a leadoff double, and after moving up to third off a Uliana sacrifice bunt would score on a wild pitch from Dutchmen starter Cooper Jones (University of Southern Mississippi), and after four it was 3-1.
Albany would quickly change that however, using three Glens Falls errors in the top of the fifth to score four runs, all with two outs. Cole Malloy (Butler University) would double, and after another Greenwood error put runners on the corners, Childers would single into right field scoring Malloy, and Hooper would have a hard time fielding the ball in right, allowing Skidmore to motor home from second after he stole the bag to tie the ballgame at three.
The inning would continue, as Malcolm Nachmanoff (Stony Brook University) would ground to Knightes, who would make his second of three errors on the night. After Childers and Nachmanoff executed a double steal, putting runners on second and third, John Novenche (Canisius College) would single in both runners and the Dutchmen would take a 5-3 lead.
Glens Falls would not let the rough inning deter their momentum however, quickly retaliating in the bottom of the fifth off Dutchmen reliever Michael Maul (Trinity University). Maul would allow a pair of walks, and after getting a ground ball back at him, would throw it into center field, loading the bases and quickly ending his night. Nate Harris (Louisiana Tech University) would take the ball and Nate Cardy (Gannon University) would swiftly turn the tides, lacing a bases-clearing double to give the hosts a 6-5 lead.
The visitors would tack on a run in the top of the sixth, as Carson Klepzig (University of Mississippi) would lead off with a single, and after stealing second base would score off another Knightes error to tie the game at six.
Both teams bats would remain quiet for the next few innings, after the rapid scoring pace in the middle innings, and the game would need extra innings to decide a winner.
In the bottom of the tenth, Griffin Neuer (Bellarmine University) would double with two outs, and Greenwood would single into right. The throw from Childers in right would end up being just a touch late, and Glens Falls would walk off with the win.
Harris would be phenomenal in his five innings of work, allowing four hits while striking out four, earning him Player of the Game recognition. Novenche would finish 1-for-4 with three RBI’s to his credit, and Childers would lead the with two of the six Dutchmen hits on the evening, finishing 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI. Jeff Rivera (University of the Cumberlands) would take the loss for Albany, allowing the two hits and the run in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Glens Falls will remain at home tomorrow for the second game of their three-game homestand, hosting Saugerties at 7:00.
