ROUNDUP: Dodgers live to dance another day

FORT MYERS, FL — The South Troy Dodgers 16U Mickey Mantle baseball team punched their ticket to the next round of the BCS Perfect Game National Championships in Southwest Florida on Thursday.

The Dodgers, 2-1 in the tournament, defeated the Virginia Black Sox 6-4 in a game that was delayed hours due to lightning in the area.

“To be able to be in the elite eight is rewarding any year we do it, but for this team especially, it means a lot,” said Manager Kevin Scorsone. “The talent down here is impressive because you see sixteen-year-old kids committed to schools such as USC, Alabama and Duke and we are not only holding our own we are making substantial noise. I credit that to this team coming together and believing in each other.”

AT THE PLATE: Will Carmichael (Guilderland) notched a two run pinch hit single, while Brandon Jones (CBA) delivered three hits in the win.

On the mound: Mike Hicks (CBA) went five innings, and Caleb Federman (Bethlehem) recorded the save.

The manager says his team has exceeded his expectations. “you always hope to perform well on a big stage like this…[but] yes they have, and it’s been fun to watch the last few days.”

The Dodgers are scheduled to play three games on Friday before potentially reaching the championship game over the weekend.

Scorsone is assisted by Kyle Van Vleet , Dan Doyle and Mike Mannix.
