Axtmann leads Maple Hill Boys Soccer to win over Greenville

CASTLETON, NY — The Maple Hill boys’ soccer team avenged last year’s loss to the Greenville Spartans in the Sectional semifinals, with a win Tuesday afternoon at Maple Hill High School.

Wasting no time, Senior Garett Axtmann scored just four minutes and twenty-four seconds into the game.  Later in the half, Axtmann scored again to make it a two-nil game, but the three-sport athlete wasn’t done there. With less than a minute remaining, Axtmann was awarded a penalty shot, which he took full advantage of. “I didn’t even draw the PK, my teammate did, and I just put it in the back of the net,” Axtmann said.  That kick gave Maple Hill a three-nil lead at the half.

In the second half again it was Axtmann, who scored his 15th goal of the year to extend the Maple Hill lead to 4, all of which had been scored by the four year Varsity player. “It wasn’t all me, it was my teammates, every time I saw an opening they saw it too,” a tired Axtmann said after the game. “I’ve been waiting a year for this game ever since they beat us 3-1 in the sectional game.”

These two teams (Maple Hill and Greenville) will meet again for their respective final game of the year on Thursday, Oct. 13th, right before the start of Sectionals.

Maple Hill will have tomorrow off before heading to Catskill on Thursday for a 4:15p.m. game, while Greenville will be in Hudson at the same time.
