Jimmy Patsos announces resignation from Siena

LOUDONVILLE — Jimmy Patsos, the men’s basketball coach at Siena College, announced his resignation on Friday after five seasons at the helm.

This is an unsurprising decision, as he was accused of verbally abusing a team manager that is diagnosed with OCD, calling him “the next Unabomber” and “insane,” a story first reported by the Times Union.

Later in the week, it was reported that he withheld per diems from players and team aids during road trips.

Finally, on Monday, it was alleged that he physically abused junior Kadeem Smithen, shoving him out of a chair during a film session the day after a loss to Marist earlier this season.

Siena has an investigation underway and it is believed that the investigation is still ongoing.

In an official statement, college president Br. Edward Coughlin said, “Our men’s basketball program is among the many treasured traditions at Siena and a source of great pride among students, alumni, fans, and supporters. Over the years, the team has celebrated wins on some of the sport’s biggest stages, and, experienced difficult losses and disappointments. Most importantly, the program has consistently represented the College with class, honor, and integrity.

“Siena’s founding Franciscan tradition calls upon us to honor the fundamental dignity of every person. Our core values demand compassion and help shape a community where all should feel welcomed, respected, and cherished. As we look forward to a new chapter in Siena men’s basketball, our shared commitment to upholding these ideals will continue to guide us.”

In a statement through his lawyer’s office, Patsos said, “I have denied and continue to deny any accusation of wrongdoing, but it was clear that it would be impossible to coach and recruit and I would never want to do or say anything that would be harmful to the team or the school,” he said. “I wish everyone at Siena the best and thank all of my players, coaches and managers for their dedication to me over the past five years. I also want to give a heart felt thank you to the community that has treated me and my wife, Michele so wonderfully during our time in the Capital District. Siena is fortunate to have an amazing, dedicated fan base. Hopefully, we will meet again.”

A national search for a new head coach is underway.

Patsos finishes with a final record of 77-92 in five seasons with the program.
