Bernhard Peter retires as top cop in Schodack

Schodack, NY — 45 years and five days since joining his hometown force, Schodack Police Chief Bernhard Peter radioed in for the last time Friday – retiring after a long career of public service.

“We built a great team of professionals in the town,” Peter told Ken Crow of the Times Union.“I got to work with great people.”

In addition to his stint as the top cop in Schodack, Peter also spent time with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department and police departments of East Greenbush, North Greenbush, and Nassau.

The 65- year old plans on traveling with his wife and spending time with their five grandchildren in his newly acquired free time.

Peter, a Hudson Valley Community College graduate, also told the Times-Union that he has received offers for part-time and full-time employment and may consider some work months from now.

For now, Assistant Chief Joseph Belardo will take over as interim chief, ahead of a possible permanent appointment by the town.
