NYSPHSAA volleyball tournament coming to Albany

It’s not the boys’ basketball tournament, but Section II will host another round of State Championships from 2018 to 2020.

The New York State Public High School Athletics Association (NYSPHSAA), which governs high school sports in the Empire State, announced Wednesday that Albany’s Capital Center would serve as the host site for the state boys’ volleyball tournament between 2018 and 2020. The decision was part of a laundry list of actions voted upon at the association’s summer meetings held Tuesday and Wednesday in Clayton, NY.

NYSPHSAA’s Central Committee also granted bids to Cold Spring Harbor High School (Gymnastics) and Ithaca College (Girls’ Swimming & Diving) to host tournaments as well from 2018 to 2020.

Specifics of each bid were not released, and it is unclear if the adjacent Times Union Center will be used for the volleyball tournament.

The Capital Center, located in downtown Albany, has 50,000 square feet of space including a ball room and six meeting rooms. According to the center’s website, it is within walking distance of restaurants, hotels, shops, art galleries, night clubs, and museums.

In 2015, the Glens Falls Civic Center, now Cool Insurence Arena, lost the State boys’ basketball tournament after hosting it for decades.
