UAlbany lacrosse earns #2 overall seed in NCAA tournament, will play Richmond

ALBANY — The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team learned their fate for the 2018 NCAA lacrosse tournament on Sunday night after winning the America East championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Danes were named the #2 overall seed in the tournament, the highest seeding in program history in the 10th NCAA tournament appearance in the team’s history and sixth year in a row. They will have a home game in round one, taking on Southern Conference champion Richmond.

The Spiders won their way into the tournament after winning the Southern Conference tournament on Saturday with an 11-10 overtime win against Jacksonville. They went 11-5 this year, and 6-1 in SoCon play.

UAlbany is in the midst of the best season in program history, with a mark of 14-2 so far this year and their fifth conference championship in six seasons. They won the conference championship on Saturday with a 14-4 win over Vermont. They did so without star player Connor Fields, who has been dealing with a knee injury. He said Saturday that he will be back for the tournament.

UAlbany hosted a first round game last season, and ended the night with a victory over North Carolina, 15-12. This year’s game will be played at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on Saturday, May 12 and will begin at 5 p.m. For those who cannot make it, the game will be televised on ESPNU.
