NFL Week 5 Hierarchy
Week five in the NFL season has concluded and it was another good week of football. A few new teams sneaked into this week’s hierarchy after their strong performances from this weekend.
Here are the top ten teams after week five.
10. Seattle Seahawks (3-2)
After a shaky start to the season especially with the offensive line being unable to protect Russell Wilson, The Seahawks are back in the top ten this week. Their defense was strong only allowing ten points against the high-flying Los Angeles Ram who leads the lead in points per game. The defense also shut down running back Todd Gurley which helped them contain and keep the score close so their struggling offense could stay in the game.
9. Dallas Cowboys (2-3)
The one thing wrong with the Cowboys is their defense. Each and every week they simple cannot stop anyone. They allowed Aaron Rodgers to put up three touchdowns against them including a game winning score in the late seconds of the game. This is a week team and Dak Prescott is not ready to be the reason why the Cowboys win every week. The Cowboys have definitely taken a step back this season and will continue to fall if they do not clean up on the defensive side of the ball.
8. Detroit Lions (3-2)
Even with a loss this past week dropping them to 3-2, the Detroit Lions squeeze into the top ten for the first time this season. Their defense is strong and Matthew Stafford is the glue holding them together has definitely earned that new contract from this past off-season. He almost brought his team back in the fourth quarter like he has done so many times before but just came up short this time. The running game is shady however (only a total of 50 yards on the ground against the Panthers) and probably will not be a threat to the Green Bay Packers late in the season when trying to snag the NFC North.
7. Carolina Panthers (4-1)
Carolina is also making their first appearance in the top ten this season. The Panthers were very disappointing the first couple of games but Cam Newton has delivered the last two weeks. He finished the game against the Lions 26-33 for 355 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is starting to look like the Cam Newton of old and could possibly make a run to a division title this year if he continues to put up these kinds of numbers.
6. New England Patriots (3-2)
The New England Patriots are a dying dynasty. Tom Brady is really showing that turning forty years old can affect how he performs. He is still the best player on the team however and that is a big problem. He is also getting hit too many times and at his age he cannot continue to be punished every snap he takes. The defense is on a record pace to become one of the worst ever and simple cannot keep opposing offenses off the field.
5. Atlanta Falcons (3-1)
The Atlanta Falcons had a their bye week this week so they will not move up or down.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (4-1)
The Philadelphia Eagles are a real team and they are scary on both sides of the ball. Carson Wentz is probably going to be the next best quarterback in the league and he definitely showed off this week against the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the game 21-30 for 304 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception and a total QBR of 90.8. Those are phenomenal number and completely tore up the Cardinal defense.
3. Denver Broncos (3-1)
The Denver Broncos also had their bye week this week and will not move up or down.
2. Green Bay Packers (4-1)
The is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the league this season. He has the ability to torture opposing defenses with his arm, his legs and honestly probably his mind too. He completely dominated the Cowboys defense and carved them up on the last drive of the game to win the game with eleven seconds left. Their defense is not great however which did allow 31 points but the running game has improved with rookie Aaron Jones rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown.
1. Kansas City Chiefs (5-0)
The Kansas City Chiefs once again top the list and remain the last undefeated team in the league. Both sides of the ball are playing extremely well and quarterback Alex Smith continues to prove to the world that he can throw the ball deep down the field. The defense continues to play well even though they are not perfect but they play hard and they move to ball quickly. They were able to contain shifty Houston Texan quarterback Deshaun Watson and made him very uncomfortable. The Chiefs are looking like a Super Bowl caliber team and they have already played tough opponents and proven they can play with the best and beat the best.
