Lind guides BHBS past Shaker/Colonie

The BHBS hockey team went for the weekend sweep on Saturday night, looking to start off 2-0, in Section 2 league play.

In the first period, the Spartans got off to a fast start. They dominated the Jets, and struck first on the power play when Alec Lind scooped up a loose puck and put it into the net easily. They continued to control the game, and it became 2-0 after Sam Swingruber scored. However, Shaker/Colonie was able to get one back. Tyler Wilson threw one to the net that deflected off a body in front and went in. Shots were 9-4 in favor of BHBS in the first period.

The Spartans came out absolutely firing in the second period. They fired off shot after shot, and kept the puck in their offensive zone for almost the entire frame. However, they just couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. That changed when a loose puck came down, and Jets goalie Dan Molloy attempted to play it out, and played it right to Lind, who put it home to make it 3-1. Shaker/Colonie just didn’t seem to go away, though. Ethan Poole got a puck to go home less than 4 minutes later to make it 3-2. 2 minutes after that, it seemed like some deja vu. A loose puck was fired down, and Alec Lind chased it. He was the first one there, and dove to hit the puck past Molloy and into the net. That was held as the score at the end of the second, and BHBS continued to lead in shots, 20-10.

In the third period, things slowed down a bit, but the intensity was still there. Jets defenseman Zach Turnbull fired a shot from the point that got through a screen and just barely squeaked under the arm of BHBS goalie Trevin Tidmarsh and in, cutting the lead to 4-3. After that, BHBS continued to gain control, holding onto the puck for most of the period. They extended the lead when freshman Evan Loveland picked up a loose puck for a breakaway, and went forehand-backhand to beat Molloy and extend the lead to 5-3. It was his first career high school goal. Tyler Wilson pretty much ruined any chance his team had at staging a last-minute comeback when he took a penalty with 1:16 left for slashing. The Jets were never able to pull the goalie, and BHBS just passed it around on their power play until the game ended.

BHBS starts off 2-0-0 in Section 2 play, and 3-1-0 overall. They have a huge weekend next week, playing at Bethlehem on Friday and at home vs La Salle on Saturday. Shaker/Colonie drops to 1-1-0 in Section 2, and 1-3-0 overall. They play at Shen on Friday, and at Niskayuna/Schenectady on Saturday.
