Dragons down Stallions behind 13 runs

A leadoff triple in the first inning is usually a sign of good things to come, and it sure was for the Glens Falls Dragons on Monday night at East Field in Glens Falls as they beat the Saugerties Stallions by a final score of 13-5 in PGCBL action.

The Stallions took a 2-1 lead in the third, but the Dragons answered them in the bottom of the inning in a big way, grabbing a 4-2 lead courtesy of three runs. They didn’t stop after that. They scored in every inning until the eighth including two key hits in the fourth inning off the bats of Anthony Vaglica and Matt Hamel that extended the Glens Falls lead to 6-2 at the end of four.

“That’s always big,” Dragons manager Cameron Curler said. “After they took (the lead) away, that answer was big for us to keep that momentum going.”

The biggest inning of the night, however, came in the fifth as the Dragons tallied four runs off an RBI single from Brendon Frank, a two-run double from Brandon Torres who would later homer in the seventh inning and another RBI single from Vaglica, part of a three-RBI night for him.

“I was just looking to barrel something up. I knew in my first at-bat that I was pulling my head out so I knew I had to go back to the basics and balancing up,” Vaglica said.

Vaglica went 2-3 with a sacrifice fly and drew a walk.

While all of this was going on, Dragons starter and Fort Ann alumni Tyler Mattison did a fantastic job of keeping the Stallion bats in check, going five innings. He gave up three runs on just three hits and struck out four.

Saugerties’ lead in the top of the third inning came courtesy of two straight RBI singles from Matt Feinstein and Jack Gonzalez, but the offensive effort of the Dragons proved to be just too much for them. Eight of the nine Dragon starters got a hit, and the same number of them scored at least one run.
“It was a good offensive night. Guys had good at-bats, we found ways to obviously put up a lot of runs, and it makes pitching easy when you score 13 runs,” Curler added.

With the loss, the Stallions fall to 13-11 on the season and are tied for third in the Eastern Division with the Albany Dutchmen. They will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on Albany at home in Saugerties. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.

Following their win, Glens Falls improves to 9-15 on the campaign, still fifth in the Eastern Division. They will also be in action on Tuesday as they take on the Oneonta Outlaws on the road, and game time is set for 7:05 p.m. They will return home on Friday facing the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in a doubleheader at East Field in Glens Falls. Start time for the night is set for 5 p.m.
