274 Section II teams earn scholar-athlete awards

LATHAM — The New York State Public High School Athletics Association (NYSPHSAA) recognized 274 local teams and  903 individual student-athletes for their work off the field and in the classroom.

“Congratulations to our member schools and student-athletes,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas said in a statement. “We continue to be proud of this program which recognizes success in the classroom. We are excited to have the opportunity to expand this program to honor even more students for the academic excellence.”

This school year marks 25 years of the association’s scholar-athlete program.

In order or a squad to be recognized as a scholar-athlete team, 75% of it’s participants must achieve at least a 90.0-grade point average.

Students that reached the GPAbenchmark, but who’s teams didn’t, were also recognized.
