Zarnofsky gets first career win as BHBS takes 4th straight

It was without a doubt a night to remember for BHBS goalie Josh Zarnofsky. The senior stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced in his first career start, and the 15th-ranked Spartans won their 4th straight game, with a 5-1 decision over Guilderland/Mohonasen/Scotia-Glenville.

Spartans junior forward Geordan Buffoline scored twice, both within the first 2 minutes of the game, to set a new team record for goals in a season, with 17. Kyle McDonald scored his second career goal, both this season, and Sam Swingruber scored his 11th goal, as he continues to lead all defensemen in Section 2 in that category.

BHBS knew that they couldn’t take any team lightly, and they came out with a fire in the first period. Buffoline scored twice in the first 1:25 of the game, and that was followed with McDonald’s goal exactly 8 minutes later. Swingruber capped off the scoring in the period, when he beat GMS goalie Dan Cooper with 3:22 remaining in the period. The Spartans outshot the Storm 21-2 in the first period, and headed into the locker room with a 4-0 lead. They took their feet off the gas pedal after that, scoring just one more goal the remainder of the game, when Alec Lind got his 14th of the season on a one-timer past Cooper. Dustin Kent scored his first goal of the season for the Storm. BHBS senior Josh Zarnofsky was excellent in his first career start, as he stopped 16 of 17 in what will likely be his last appearance with the team. If he does not appear in any more games for the Spartans this season, he will finish his high school career with a record of 1-0-0, a GAA of 2.40, and a save percentage of .886. Shots were 40-17 in favor of BHBS. The win moved BHBS to 10-4-1 (6-3-1 S2), and was their 4th in a row. They look to continue that streak on Saturday against their rival Niskayuna/Schenectady at Union College. G/M/S falls to 1-13-0 (0-11-0 S2). They will next face off against Tri-Falls at home on Saturday.
