Wright struggles, Offense fades as Royals win game 1

@Connor Friend

Despite the performances of Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia going a combined 9-for-9, the Sox offense again just disappeared. The Sox picked up 15 hits and only came away with 3 runs! It also didn’t help the team as Steven Wright walked the first two batters he faced and then let up a 3-run home run for Eric Hosmer. Later in the same inning he would walk Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon would hit a 2-run homer to give the Royals a 5-0 lead after 1 inning. Betts and Pedroia were the only men who picked up RBIs in the game, as the Sox would go 0-2 with 2 strikeouts with the bases loaded. The Sox are the second worst team in the AL with the bases loaded, batting under .250 in a league where the average is .298. The Sox would make a 9th inning comeback attempt with Royals Closer Kelvin Herrera on the mound, but it was stomped after David Ortiz grounded into a 1-5-3 double play and Sandy Leon grounded out to end the game. The Royals would defeat the Red Sox 6-3 with Kelvin Herrera pick t up the save. Tonight’s probably starters are David Price |BOS| (12-8 4.00ERA) against Danny Duffy |KC| (11-1 2.66ERA).

THINGS TO WATCH FOR; Sox Outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr will move back to the 9 hole tonight, this comes with a lefty on the mound in the form of Danny Duffy. Bradley has batted .236 against lefties and .167 in the month of August.

Royals starter Danny Duffy who started the year in the bullpen is a candidate for AL Cy Young this season but has yet to make enough starts to prove so. He also has only allowed one hit to lefty pitching since July 22nd, that looks to change as he faces David Ortiz who has gone 3-for-10 in his career against Duffy. He’s also won all 5 of his decisions in the month of August.

Sox starter David Price has registered the lowest ERA all season for him and looks to continue to put in quality starts and reclaim his role as Red Sox ace. Price’s last 3 starts (Arizona, @Baltimore, @Tampa Bay) he’s gone 8 innings, 6 innings, and 8 innings again while only giving up a combined 4 runs in that time. Also registering 20 strikeouts over his last 22 innings.

The Red Sox offense has struggled of late, and hasn’t surpassed 5 runs scored in 4 days. The team left 11 runner in scoring position last night while getting 15 hits, a third of which came from Mookie Betts. The 6 batters that came into bat in the bottom four spots of the order went a combined 1-for-16 with one hit coming from Brock Holt. The offense looks to make a return tonight but faces a tough matchup in the battle of lefty aces.
