BOSTON, MASS. – Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson scored 2:51 into overtime to give No. 5/5 Boston University a 5-4 win against the 10th-ranked Union College men’s hockey team, Thursday night at Agganis Rink. The Dutchmen, who dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, go to 14-5-2, while the Terriers move to 11-5-2.
After forcing overtime with a power-play goal at 17:06 of the third, Forsbacka Karlsson completed his hat trick in overtime, scoring on his own rebound to give Boston University the 5-4 win.
Luc Brown has his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist and Brett Supinski and Sebastian Vidmar also each contributed a goal and an assist for Union. Mike Vecchione chipped in with a pair of helpers and Spencer Foo extended his Division I-best point streak to 19 games with an assist. In goal, Alex Sakellaropoulos made 29 saves.
Boston University took a 1-0 lead with 3:10 into the first, converting on a power-play opportunity. Shane Switzer’s shot from the point found its way through traffic before an into the back of the net for his third of the season.
Forsbacka Karlsson made it 2-0 5:41 later, burying a feed from Bobo Carpenter high on the glove side.
The Dutchmen bounced back quickly, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead.
Brown got Union on the board at 13:57 of the first, redirecting DeSimone’s point shot past Boston University goaltender Connor LaCouvee (35 saves) for his third career tally.
Maier flipped home a backhand at 17:05 to tie the game at 2-2 and Vidmar put the Dutchmen in front with a power-play goal at 7:54 of the second, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Vecchione and Foo.
The Terriers tied things at 3-3 at midway through the period when Carpenter took advantage of a miscue behind the Union net. Carpenter picked up a loose puck at the side of the Dutchmen’s goal and stuffed a shot inside the left post at 11:13.
Supinski put Union ahead with a power-play goal before the end of the frame, ripping a one-timer from the slot at 15:52 for this third of the year.
Forsbacka Karlsson provided the response for Boston University with 2:54 left in regulation, firing a wrist shot under the crossbar from the bottom of the left circle before potting the game-winning goal in overtime. Carpenter picked up an assist on the winner for his third point of the night.
Union outshot Boston University 39-34. Both teams finished 2-for-4 on the power play.
The Dutchmen return to ECAC Hockey play next weekend, hosting Dartmouth (Jan. 13) and No. 3/4 Harvard (Jan. 14).
