The Upstate Courier is an online news source covering New York’s Capital Region and the rural unincorporated communities of Castleton, Schodack, Valatie, Chatham, Nassau and many other small communities in the far reaches of Rensselaer and Columbia Counties. A majority of these communities lack media organizations of record and are overlooked by the area’s media elite.

Launched in 2016 by area high school students and the Rossiter/Cookingham family, the Courier covers local news, sports, community happenings, and much more. We hope to provide hyperlocal, community-first coverage to even more underserved markets around the area, but we need YOUR help to do so.

More stories with a greater focus on in-depth reporting, an expanded website, better visual equipment (we primarily use cell phones for most of our photography!) mobile apps, and newsletters are all things we would like to do, but currently cannot without funding.

Our current costs include website maintenance, business registration fees, business services, new technology fees, and more. They all add up quickly, and we’d like to do even more in the community – but we need to keep our current doors open before we can build an even better house of transparency. Please help preserve the independents of our area – local and independent news sources are few and far between, and we cherish and love our work, and want to do more! Every little bit helps out.
