On Sunday afternoon, Hudson Valley Community College hosted the Section 2, Class A quarterfinals. Here are the results:
#4 Amsterdam vs #5 Mohonasen
Despite a slow start in which they didn’t score until more than three minutes in, a huge third quarter led Mohonasen to a blowout 73-55 win over Amsterdam. Four three-pointers in the third quarter were the key for the Warriors of Mohonasen with strong shooting from Duncan Tallman and Brandon Kruzinski, who led Mohonasen with 19 points each. Jared Abdul-Aziz had 11.
“We expected that we were going to be in a dog fight, and we stretched it out more in the second half than anyone expected, ourselves included,” Mohonasen head coach Josh Peck said.
Anthony Aponte led Amsterdam with 20 points. Mohonasen will now play Lansingburgh in the Class A semifinals. That game will be on Wednesday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
#3 Averill Park vs #6 Queensbury
Noah Yearsley and Anthony Germaniero were a two-man wrecking crew for Averill Park as they picked up a 56-42 victory over Queensbury. Averill Park jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back, despite Queensbury closing the gap a number of times throughout the game. Yearsley finished with 25 points, and Germaniero had 19.
“Today I thought we shared the ball tremendously. I thought we took quality shots every trip, we used shot clock when we needed to, we attacked when we needed to, and it helps when we’re making threes,” Averill Park head coach Dave Pugliese said.
Cam Bleibtrey led Queensbury with 11 points, and Devin O’Leary had 10. Averill Park will now face Scotia-Glenville in the Class A semifinals on Wednesday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Tip-off is set for 6 PM.
#2 Scotia-Glenville vs #7 Hudson Falls
An all-around dominant performance spearheaded by 23 points from Christian Corker led Scotia-Glenville to a blowout 63-40 win over Hudson Falls. Scotia-Glenville led by eight points at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, not letting Hudson Falls even get a sniff of keeping it close. Strong defensive play held Hudson Falls to just 16 points in the first half, and the Tartans pulled away in the fourth despite a close third quarter.
“You get breathing room. Shots go in a little easier. They made a nice little run in the third quarter. I thought we were able to get it back quick enough,” Scotia-Glenville head coach James Giammattei said of getting a lead early. Additionally, the game was Giammattei’s 400th career victory, becoming the 17th coach in Section II history to hit that mark. He is now the 2nd active coach in the 400 win club, joining Jack Sherwin of Argyle.
Cameron Jett led Hudson Falls with 14 points. Scotia-Glenville will advance to the Class A semifinals on Wednesday at the Glens Falls Civic Center, taking on Averill Park. That game will begin at 6 PM.
#1 Lansingburgh vs #9 BH-BL
In the lone potential upset bid of the afternoon, BH-BL looked very good until a run from top-seeded Lansingburgh in the final minutes allowed them to pull away with Lansingburgh picking up a 67-54 win. BH-BL had kept the game close the entire way and trailed by as little as four with under two minutes to go. After that, Lansingburgh went on a run to put the game away and spoil a potential upset. Davonte Jones and Jahidi Wallace led Lansingburgh with 17 points each, and Ben Keppler had 16 points for BH-BL while Josh Craig added 15.
“The kids played great. The young kids came up and played well. Can’t ask for anything more,” BH-BL head coach Shawn Kline said.
Lansingburgh will now move on to the Class A semifinals, where they will take on Mohonasen at the Glens Falls Civic Center on Wednesday. Tip-off will be at 7:30 PM.
