Siena’s Wright named MAAC player of the week

Loudonville NY – Siena Senior guard Marquis Wright has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletics Association (MAAC)’s player of the week for the third time in his career, the College announced Monday in a statement.

The Waldorf, Maryland native averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.5 rebounds while helping lead the Saints to a pair of road wins last week at defending MAAC Tournament Champion Iona and archrival Marist. Against the Gaels, he scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to help rally the Saints back from a 13-point deficit and snap Iona’s seven-game home win streak and six-game winning streak overall. He also scored nine of his points over the final four minutes and sank the go-ahead, game-winning free throws with 12.3 seconds left.

Then against Marist, he scored 16 of his team-high 21 points in the second half and dished out six assists without committing a turnover in an 84-77 win. He was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line over the final 44 seconds to help Siena take the victory.

The 6″1′ little big man captured the award earlier this season following the first week of action on Nov. 14 and previously won the league’s top weekly honor on Dec. 28, 2015.

Wright and the Saints will look to take down Conference leader Monmouth when they play host to the Hawks on Monday at 7:00 p.m. The game is being played downtown at the Times Union Center and can be heard on Talk 1300 AM (WGDJ), in addition to Time Warner Cable Sports Channel.
