Siena’s Penn named MAAC rookie of the week

LOUDONVILLE — Siena basketball freshman Roman Penn earned recognition Monday from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, being named the rookie of the week for men’s basketball.

Penn had a great week, averaging 13.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game over two contests against unanimous America East favorite Vermont and Bryant. In the Bryant game on Sunday, he scored a career-high 19 points and tacked on nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The 5-11 freshman is averaging 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and has played in all 11 of Siena’s games this season and starting in seven of them.

Niagara’s Matt Scott was named the overall MAAC player of the week.

The Saints are 3-8 to start the season, and will play again on Wednesday, December 20 on the road against Memphis before returning home to close out non-conference play at the Times Union Center to take on Holy Cross on Friday, December 22. Those two games will begin at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
