Schuylerville takes Class C field hockey crown

SCHUYLERVILLE– A barrage of goals in the first half led to a blowout victory in the sectional championship as Schuylerville field hockey beat Hoosick Falls on Monday night at Schuylerville High School by a score of 5-0 to take the Class C crown.

It took just over two minutes for the Horses to hit the board for the first time, on a goal from Alice Voell-White. It was their first of two goals in the first six minutes of the game, as Grace Hanehan scored Schuylerville’s second goal 5:06 in to make it 2-0 in that short length of time.

“Coming up against (Hoosick Falls), we knew we had to come out strong and not let up. There was no letting anything up to give them even a window of opportunity,” Schuylerville coach Erin Lloyd said.
The Horses made it 3-0 just before the halfway point in the first half, this time on a goal from Morgan Gunter. She had a huge game, scoring two goals and tacking on an assist.

Hoosick Falls pressured Schuylerville a little bit late in the first half but it ended up, as most things did in the game, going Schuylerville’s way. Alison Burnham ran the length of the field with the ball and put it in the goal to put the Horses up 4-0, seemingly ending Hoosick Falls’ chances to make a second-half comeback.

“That’s what we were thinking when we were going into the game. We need to get in there and score, score, score, score so they can’t catch up, and we did it,” Burnham said.

Schuylerville added their final goal of the night early on in the second half, on Gunter’s second goal of the night that it made it 5-0.

The win marks Schuylerville’s second sectional championship in three years as they fell in the sectional semifinals in 2016.

“That leadership and that experience was huge, and that drive to get back. We missed the rematch last year, falling in the semis, so it was just huge to get back here,” Lloyd said of the team coming back to the sectional final.

Hoosick Falls’ season ends with a record of 16-2.

Schuylerville will play again on Sunday in the regional round, taking on Section 3 champion Weedsport. That game will be played at Shenendehowa High School, and game time is set for 4 p.m.
