ROUNDUP: Benning’s dinger saves Spartans’ season

MALTA — One year after capturing the Section II Class C title in extra innings, the Greenville High School softball team is headed back to the Sectional Championship game thanks to a walk-off home run.

Hoosic Valley’s Taylor Champagne tied the game at three in the top of the seventh inning. The senior centerfielder singled on a line drive to center field, scoring junior teammate Brianne Bogue.

Six pitches later, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Caila
Benning punched her team’s ticket. The Greenville sophomore hit a walk-off solo home run to win the game, 4-3.

The sixth-seeded Spartans (15-4) advance to face the No.5 seeded Lake George Warriors at Moreau Park in South Glens Falls, on Friday at 5:00 p.m. The winning team will earn a spot in the State Tournament.
