The Queensbury Spartans rolled into SCRF on Saturday night in a battle of the Spartans, as they faced off with BHBS. The hometown Spartans, who were expected to win last night’s contest, did not follow through.
Queensbury opened up the scoring when Austin Gordon put the puck past goalie Trevin Tidmarsh(17 saves) on the power play with 12:59 left in the 1st. BHBS responded with a goal by Alec Lind, and another from Tino Benamati with 11 seconds remaining in the period.
The sophomore goalie Tidmarsh struggled to locate the puck at times, and allowed 3 goals before being pulled in favor of senior Mark Stocker in the 3rd period. Stocker made 2 saves and allowed 1 goal in relief. The hometown Spartans outshot the visiting Spartans 39-23 in the game, despite the final being an even 4-4 tie. Austin Gordon scored his second goal of the game with 4:52 remaining in the 3rd to tie it at 4. No more goals would be scored. The 5 minute overtime was somewhat uneventful, except for a few good chances for BHBS that did not go through. They had a chance just seconds into the overtime, when Alec Lind and Tino Benamati had a 2 on 1, but Lind’s cross-ice pass for Benamati took a bounce and went over Benamati’s stick. The tie means that BHBS is now 5-2-1 on the season. They earn 1 point from the game, and remain the same place in the Section 2 standings. It wasn’t a great game for BHBS, but it could have been much worse. Despite not playing extremely well for most of the game, they still stay in the same spot in the standings with a chance to move up next weekend if they can defeat Shenendehowa and La Salle. So, even though it wasn’t great in the Spartan’s return home, it could have been much worse.
