Police: Chatham man injured deputy, interfered with arrest

CHATHAM — A Chatham man attempting to stop the arrest of one person found himself in handcuffs after he allegedly assaulted a Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy during a Tuesday evening incident in the village, Hudson Valley 360 reports.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Oct. 10, sheriff’s deputies were called to assist Chatham Village Police in a multiperson disturbance on Main Street.

While attempting to arrest one person, police say 23-year-old Jaquan A. Hamilton caused physical injury to a sheriff’s deputy in an attempt to prevent the arrest.

Hamilton faces charges of second-degree assault, a class D felony, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration; both are class A misdemeanors, and disorderly conduct, a violation.

He was arraigned in Chatham Village Court by justice Walter Simonsmeier and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail and $50,000 bond.

The office of Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett did not release the name of the injured deputy, and no information was given about the injury.
