No way McAdoo should be Giants coach anymore

After the Giants’ 31-21 loss Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium, it couldn’t have surprised anyone that they gave the San Francisco 49ers their first win of the season.

The Giants have mailed it in for the season by losing 51-17 to the upstart Los Angeles Rams last Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The visitors scoring 51 points and beating the home team by 34 should have been an eye-opener for Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch.

To think the Giants all of sudden would play hard for the beleaguered Ben McAdoo and themselves after being embarassed was delusional thinking, especially when several unnamed Giants told ESPN’s Josina Anderson this past week that he lost the team and that the guys don’t care to play anymore.

With all the negativity surrounding McAdoo, Mara and Tisch should have fired him this past week rather than have him travel to Santa Clara with the team. It has become a toxic situation for him and the players.

Maybe the Giants co-owners will finally get it and put McAdoo out of his misery by firing him this afternoon. There’s no reason to delay the inevitable anymore. It’s not fair for the Giants fans who have to watch this for the rest of the season. Maybe the Giants won’t win anymore games this year, but they will put in the effort and be disciplined with an interim coach. It can’t get any worse, right?

With the Giants playing the Kansas City Chiefs at home this Sunday, it will get ugly with the Giants fans if McAdoo is retained. Remember when Giants fans chanted “Ray Must Go” during the forgettable Ray Handley years? It would make that pale in comparison.

The Giants loathe firing a head coach in the middle of the season. The last time they did that was in 1976, which they fired Bill Arnsparger after going 0-7 to start the season. But what choice do they have? Keeping McAdoo around would be insanity of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The Giants did not bother to play defense against the 49ers the entire game. Whenever the 49ers had the ball, the Giants were more than happy to let them run over them by not bothering to tackle. This is where the coach has to take the blame. If he can’t get his players to play, it’s a problem.

Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins contributed to the 49ers’ three touchdowns in this game. The Pro Bowler was beaten deep on an 83-yard touchdown catch by Marquise Goodwin (he played despite losing his baby boy due to pregnancy complications) that gave the 49ers a 10-6 lead in the second quarter. He could not tackle Garrett Celek, who scored on a 47-yard touchdown run, giving the 49ers a 17-13 lead. He did not make an effort to tackle Carlos Hyde, who scored on a 21-yard touchdown run, extending the 49ers’ lead to 24-13.

It’s interesting that it was Jenkins that got torched. Remember he was suspended by McAdoo last week for not showing up to the team’s headquarters after the bye week. It does not take Sherlock Holmes to realize the Giants cornerback quit as a protest to being suspended.

Yes, it’s not a good light on Jenkins for quitting and not bothering to play well, but McAdoo’s job is to make sure players come out ready to play. He hasn’t done that. It is not only the Giants cornerback that has quit, but so has the offense and the rest of the defense. This type of behavior gets a coach fired whether it’s fair or not.

McAdoo did not have much to say about his team getting their butts kicked. He talked about watching the tape to find out what went wrong. He talked about moving on and get his team ready to play the Chiefs. He sounded like a coach who has no answers by dancing around the questions. He also had the body language of a head coach that can’t wait to be fired.

McAdoo’s bosses should be ticked off that he is not holding himself accountable for the poor coaching job he has done. They also should be bothered that he is not giving answers that Giants fans want to explain why the team is bad. That’s as much as a fireable offense as the team losing games and players quitting.

The charade has to end now. There’s no reason to wait. The players know he is gone at the end of the year, so there’s no incentive for them to try anymore.

The Giants players owe it to themselves and their fans to care every week, and if firing McAdoo will make them want to play football, so be it.

Mara attended the game yesterday on the road, and he was not happy understandably.  He shouldn’t wait until after the season to do something about it.

Firing McAdoo right now would provide quite a message to the players and the fans.

It would mean he hears their pain.
