On court promotions tend to be a dime a dozen, and nine times out of ten the fan involved succeeds only in making an idiot out of themselves. But one Louisville student did the impossible Thursday, converting a layup, free throw, three-pointer and half-court shot to win what was supposed to be $38,000 in cold hard cash. When it came time to cough up the cash, a stupid technicality conveniently came up.
Jackson Logsdon, an out of state Louisville student, completed the tall task during a women’s basketball game against Virginia and planned on using the money to pay off College loans. But now it’s looking like he’ll be paying them off until he’s 70. That’s because a technicality in the contest’s contract states that anyone who has played high school basketball within the past six years is not eligible. WTF?
“It is a huge bummer as I am an out-of-state student,” Logsdon said in an email to the Courier-Journal. “It would have went a long way to paying off student loans and anything in that manner. It was still an awesome experience and something I’ll never forget. Very bittersweet though.”
Not only is this a childish cop-out, but it’s like that friend we all have who makes bets but never pays them out because “we never shook on it.”
Note to promotional staff: check participants eligibility before dragging them out to fill up your unnecessary media timeouts.
Why we stop games so the networks can make money is something I’ll never understand. It’s not the way the game was meant to be played. But that’s another column for another day.
