Gerrain leads Maple Hill Girls Soccer to Senior Night victory over Greenville

Schodack, NY — The Maple Hill girls varsity soccer team entered Monday afternoon’s matchup with the Spartans of Greenville on a two-game win streak, but when all was said and done the Wildcats would extend that number to three, just ahead of Sectionals.

It would be one single goal late in the first that would lead the Wildcats to their one-nil victory. That goal came at the feet of Taylor Gerrain, 30 minutes and 23 seconds into the game.

When asked about that goal, the Maple Hill junior pivoted, like any good team player, to the efforts of her teammates, especially Arianna Papas. “It wasn’t just me, Arianna had a lot of saves and it kept us in the game tonight,” Gerrain said.

The scoreboard may not have shown it, but this one could have easily gone either way. Had it not been for yet another stellar performance in goal from junior keeper Arianna Papas, who put up seven saves in each half for the lady Wildcats, Hill’s ending might not have been so happy. “She was incredible in there,” said Maple Hill head coach Sheila Golden, in reference to Papas’s performance.

Ironically, the last time these two teams met it was in a one-nil win for Greenville at home on Sept. 21. Even more satisfactory for the Wildcats, tonight’s win came on Senior Day, the last regular season home game. “I knew we could come back at home this time and beat them with our skills and speed,” said senior Cameron Lankenau.

With this win, Maple Hill improves to 8-8 on the season and more importantly .500. With the sectional seeding meeting tomorrow, you can bet 8-8 looks a lot more glamorous than a frowning 7-9 record to the committee.

For Greenville, the loss puts a wrinkle in an otherwise impressive 12-1-1, now 12-2-1 season. Unfortunately for the Spartans, the loss will likely drop them down a seed or two, but it shouldn’t. As already indicated, this one could have easily gone either way.

Speculation aside, tomorrow is the day that we will know for sure the impact of today’s game.  The seedings and pairings are expected to be released around noon.
