Burnt Hills beats South Glens Falls behind pass and run

GLENS FALLS– Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake is usually a run-first team, but they utilized all parts of their offense in a win on Friday against South Glens Falls at South High by a final score of 48-15.

The Spartans went up 14-0 by the end of the first quarter with the first touchdown coming on a pass. Quarterback Darien LaPietro found Michael Levan from 41 yards away to give BH-BL the first lead just over four minutes into the contest.

The defense came up next as South Glens Falls tight end Zach Nolan fumbled on a pass and was picked up by Spartan linebacker Jack Wyatt who ran it for 35 yards to the house to make it 14-0 early.

“It was a situation where we had to go on the road and make sure that we got off to a good start. We were able to do that. The kids executed real well,” Burnt Hills head coach Matt Shell said.

The Spartans went up 20-0 late in the second quarter, and that was when their scoring really began. After South High scored for the first time, it took BH-BL two plays to answer. D’Andre Lashley ran for 60 yards on the first play of the drive, and Jacob Stanko pushed the ball 10 yards to score. It was Stanko’s first of two touchdowns of the night as he rushed for 94 yards and received for another 23.

“At the beginning of the season, we were more of a run-based offense. We didn’t pass as much. This week, coach put in some new stuff, and we were just trying to pass a little bit more,” Stanko said.

LaPietro also talked about it. “Tonight, we came out kind of balanced out more. It’s nice to keep the defense guessing if it’s a run or a pass,” he said.

Burnt Hills led 28-7 at the break and scored three more times in the second on Stanko’s second touchdown, a three-yard rush from Bryce Mussen, and the final one from Lashley from three yards out. South High’s two scores came on a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Schrammel and a one-yard rush on a QB keeper from Connor Bovair.

“We played a good football team,” South High head coach Matt Hammond said. “They’re just well-disciplined, well-coached, and they got great athletes.”

Burnt Hills is now 5-0 on the season after the win. They will play again on Saturday, October 7 taking on Amsterdam at home. That game will begin at 2:30 p.m.

South Glens Falls is now 3-2. They are back in action on Friday, October 6 on the road against Scotia with a 7 p.m. start.
