Bullpen stumbles, Offense regresses as Rays win game 2

@Connor Friend

Coming off a 6 inning, 11 strikeout start against the Rays a week ago Drew Pomeranz was searching for revenge against the club. It didn’t turn out as well after he gave up a game tying two run homer to Rays catcher Luke Maile in the 7th. The bullpen would again be called up on to try and keep the game at hand while the scuffling Sox offense could get the lead back. Clay Bucholz would come into the game in the eighth and allow a solo shot to Red Sox killer Evan Longoria. That would be the decider as the Rays would go on to win 4-3 with Alex Colome picking up the save for the Rays. Today’s probable starters are Steven Wright |BOS| (13-6 3.18ERA) against Drew Smyly |TB| (6-11 4.80ERA) in the rubber match of the series and final game of the Red Sox home stand.

THINGS TO WATCH FOR; Sox starter Steven Wright will make his second starter after returning from the disabled list for bicep tightness. Wright, has never faced the Rays yet and looks to build off being roughed up in his first start. Wrights start against the Royals on Saturday was a rough outing where he gave up a 3 run and two run shot before settling down and lasting 6 and only allowing those first 2 innings of blemishes.

Sox reliever Brad Ziegler was unavailable last night and was sent home earlier in the day due to cases of the flu. Manager John Farrell went to Clay Bucholz in a spot where it looked Ziegler would fit and Bucholz would allow the stalemate to be broken via the long ball.

The third base position for the Sox has been a scuffling point this season and every day that passes the 6 hole comes and goes with many struggles. Travis Shaw, who beat our Pablo Sandoval for the starting gig is only batting .248 and is 7-for-38 (.184) in his last 15 games. Aaron Hill also hasn’t fared well since being traded to the Sox, he’s batting .259 and .158 over his last 15 games. The speculation continues to gather around Sox top Prospect Yoan Moncada who has only played 9 games at 3rd base but provides a unique mix of Speed and Power. John Farrell hinted this afternoon at Moncada being called up Thursday and effectively become a September call up when the rosters expand.

Rays starter Drew Smyly is 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA in nine appearances (seven starts) against the Red Sox, he’s also 1-1 with 1.71ERA in four starts at Fenway Park. In August, Smyly is 3-0 with a 3.03ERA.
